주한미국 성북동 부대사관저에서 개최되는 본 전시는 시카고의 모더니즘 건축과 엄격한 격자 구조에서 영감을 받아, 시스템적 규칙성과 표현의 자유가 화면 위에서 공존하는 방식을 집요하게 탐구하는 박주언의 예술 세계를 조명한다. 작가는 학생 시절의 현실적 제약 속에서 발견한 홈디포의 규격화된 문(Door)이나 길거리의 투박한 하수구 고무판 등 주변 사물을 회화의 매체이자 도구로 적극 징발한다. 이렇듯 관습을 벗어난 재료 조달과 실험 정신은 가상의 평평한 이미지를 실존적인 회화의 무게감으로 전환하는 강력한 명분이 된다.
작업 전반을 관통하는 아크릴 모노타입 기법은 작가의 인위적인 통제와 붓자국을 화면에서 지워내어 색채 자체의 순수한 물질성을 추출하는 핵심 방법론이다. 격자 구조 안에서 보색을 반복적으로 레이어링하거나, 압착된 고무판을 화면에서 떼어내는 행위를 통해 형성된 '아크릴의 살(Flesh)'은 평면의 안료에 물리적인 부피와 팽팽한 긴장감을 부여한다. 결과적으로 이번 전시는 엄격히 통제된 규칙 위에 예측 불가능한 신체의 직관과 리듬을 얹어 완성한 거대한 '색채의 퇴적'이며, 외부의 질서 속에서 자신을 정립해 나간 치열한 성찰의 기록이다.
Held at the U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission’s residence in Seongbuk-dong, this exhibition illuminates the artistic world of Jueon Park, who relentlessly explores the coexistence of systematic regularity and creative freedom on canvas, heavily inspired by the modernist architecture and rigid grid structures of Chicago. Park actively appropriates everyday objects—such as standardized doors from Home Depot found during student financial hardships or crude street drainage rubber mats—as painterly mediums and tools. This unconventional material procurement and radical experimentation provide a powerful justification for converting flat, ephemeral digital images into existential painterly weight.
The acrylic monotype technique, central to his entire practice, serves as a core methodology to erase artificial control and brushstrokes, isolating the pure materiality of color. By repeatedly layering complementary colors within the grid or peeling away compressed rubber mats, the resulting "acrylic flesh" infuses flat pigments with physical volume and taut tension. Ultimately, this exhibition showcases a monumental "chromatic deposition," where unpredictable bodily intuition and rhythm overwrite strictly controlled rules, serving as a rigorous record of self-definition within external order.
